Practical tips for Aste Nagusia first-timers
A few honest notes if it's your first Big Week:
- For the fireworks, go early. The best viewing spots (Paseo Nuevo, the slopes of Monte Igueldo, the western end of La Concha) fill up two hours before the rocket. Drop your bags at the locker first, then walk straight to your spot.
- Txosnak don't open until late afternoon. Don't show up at noon expecting the festival; arrive after 6 PM for street life, after 9 PM for the full crowd.
- Wear white with a blue neckerchief. Not mandatory, but locals do — the colours are San Sebastián's city flag.
- Don't bring valuables to the night-time crowds. Passport, laptop, jewellery — leave it all in the locker. Big-event pickpocketing happens here as it does anywhere.
- Hydrate. Cantabrian-coast August is deceptive: it's not Seville hot, but the humidity catches you out.
