Aste Nagusia 2026 Luggage Storage in San Sebastián: Where to Drop Your Bags Safely
Travelling to San Sebastián for Aste Nagusia / Semana Grande 2026 (15-22 August)? Secure 24/7 luggage storage in central Donostia, minutes from La Concha bay and the international fireworks competition.

If you've heard of Pamplona's San Fermín, you know one side of the Basque Country's summer. Aste Nagusia — literally "Big Week" in Basque, known in Spanish as Semana Grande — is the other. From Saturday 15 August to Saturday 22 August 2026, San Sebastián / Donostia hosts what may be the most spectacular city festival you've never heard of: eight days of fireworks over La Concha bay (the International Fireworks Competition draws teams from every continent), open-air concerts on the Boulevard and Plaza de la Trinidad, txosnak (food-and-drink stalls) packing the Old Town, and a city that simply doesn't sleep.
If you're flying in or coming up from Bilbao for the festival, you'll quickly run into the same practical question every traveller faces: where do you leave your luggage?
Why luggage storage matters during Aste Nagusia
San Sebastián fills to capacity during Big Week. Hotels and pensions book out months in advance, and check-in is typically not available until 3:00 PM. Most visitors arrive in the morning — sometimes on the first train from Madrid or Barcelona, sometimes off a flight via Bilbao airport (one hour by bus), sometimes by car from southern France or the Spanish interior — and find themselves with five or six hours to kill before they can drop their bags.
Then there are the day-trippers: travellers based in Bilbao (only 40 minutes by bus), or visitors from across the French border (Hendaye is just 18 km away, with a direct train in 35 minutes) who come up specifically for one night of fireworks and head back the same evening. For all of them, having somewhere safe to leave luggage is the difference between enjoying La Concha at sunset and dragging a suitcase through pintxo bars.

Practical tips for Aste Nagusia first-timers
A few honest notes if it's your first Big Week:
- For the fireworks, go early. The best viewing spots (Paseo Nuevo, the slopes of Monte Igueldo, the western end of La Concha) fill up two hours before the rocket. Drop your bags at the locker first, then walk straight to your spot.
- Txosnak don't open until late afternoon. Don't show up at noon expecting the festival; arrive after 6 PM for street life, after 9 PM for the full crowd.
- Wear white with a blue neckerchief. Not mandatory, but locals do — the colours are San Sebastián's city flag.
- Don't bring valuables to the night-time crowds. Passport, laptop, jewellery — leave it all in the locker. Big-event pickpocketing happens here as it does anywhere.
- Hydrate. Cantabrian-coast August is deceptive: it's not Seville hot, but the humidity catches you out.
- Pintxos crawl, plan loosely. The Old Town has dozens of bars within a five-minute radius. Pick a starting street (Calle 31 de Agosto is the classic) and let the night unfold.
